Hulses Sowing More Discord Among the Brethren

The Latest Problem
Rocky and Helen Hulse of Mormon Missions Midwest Outreach (MMMO) are at it again. This time, they have me as their target. It pains me that I feel compelled to report this. We used to be friends, and Rocky even called me several years ago to ask me if I wanted to run their ministry in Nauvoo, IL.
On April 20, 2013, they posted the following on Facebook. It is a picture of Jill Martin Rische and me together at the Capstone Conference in Salt Lake City, UT on April 13, 2013 with the following description (misspellings and grammar are unchanged in the following quotes):

The conference was timed so as not to delay any of the speakers or the conference. During the entire conference 'NO' person in the audience did such a thing, as rush the speakers on stage. Instead spoke with them at their tables out front and took pictures with speakers or others. However, a guy rudely interrupted the transition by rushing up onto the stage and began talking to Jill, as she was attempting to gather her things and get off the stage to make room for Rocky to get started. Rocky took a couple of steps away 2 or 3 times to stop this interruption and begin his presentation. However, this guy (whom Rocky did not recognize) would not leave the stage. Jill was doing her best to gather her things including her computer you can see in her arms to get of the stage for Rocky, but this guy pulled out his cell phone. Unbelievable he calls Rocky over to take a photo of him and Jill. It wasn't until the guy asks Jill to sign something for him that Rocky heard his name. Only then did Rocky realized who it was causing the delay at the conference.
If this was simply someone who didn't know better that would have been one thing; however, this is a person who 'DOES' know better than to interrupt speakers during any conference. He is known for this doing this sort of thing. - An Unconscionable Self Promoter who injects himself in photo opts - It was a shameful display of bad behavior to disrupt the conference when he could have simply waited for her to leave the stage and arrive at her table in the church foyer.
In today's world cell phones with camera's are everywhere and this was caught taking place.”
In the comments section, they said, “Thank you for your like on this photo which clearly shows this person had no respect for the conference the speakers or those in the audience. As they say ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’.” They continued in another comment, “Yes, it was outrageous and would have been outrageous for anyone to interrupt an entire conference which was taking place. All of the people at the conference think highly of Walter Martin's daughter, including us. There were tables set up in the Church Foyer for meeting, greeting and taking photos with all the speakers and other ministries present. There was no reason whatsoever for him to have rushed upon stage, preventing the next speaker Rocky Hulse to begin his presentation. This guy was not in attendance at the Capstone Conference at Calvary Chapel. He was at his home with a group of people, he rushed in and rushed out the afternoon on the 13th for one reason only, to get his photo taken on the stage with Dr. Walter Martin's daughter whom this ministry has known for sometime.
What he did is clearly shown in this photo, the next ministry MMMO [Mormon Missions Midwest Outreach] information was already displayed on the three screens to begin and he held it up by his rude behavior. If he thought so highly of her why didn't he wait and spend sometime in the Church Foyer with her taking all the photos he wanted? This guy is known for his photo opts everywhere he goes and doing this clearly shows that to be true, yet again.”
Then they posted, “Rocky, called and spoke with Rob, not 5 minutes ago. No one commenting here has knowledge of the entire situation. Rob, immediately agreed to what was requested by this ministry. This thread is closed all comments-Any and all further comments will be deleted. …You have no knowledge of what Rocky's short conversation was about; however, it did 'NOT' concern this photo.

So What Really Happened?
I only went to the Capstone Conference to hear Jill, meet her, get her to sign my book (Through the Windows of Heaven), and get a quick photo with her. We have corresponded over email, but had never met. (I used to attend her late dad’s Sunday school class while in college, and was looking forward to interning under him at the Christian Research Institute for the fall semester of 1989. Unfortunately, Walter passed away earlier that summer.) I had no idea what the conference rules were. I was in a rush to get there and then out of there, since I had to get back and get ready for our Ex-Mormon Meetup that night. Jill and I were talking to each other, and then I turned and looked for someone I knew to take our picture (I’d rather have someone I know than a complete stranger take the picture). When I saw Rocky, I asked him if he would take the picture. As I went to give him the camera, some other guy came up to talk to Jill for quite a while (so it just wasn’t one guy who talked to Jill contrary to what the Hulses reported). Rocky and I just stood there in silence waiting for what seemed like forever until this other guy finished. As soon as he did, Rocky snapped the picture, and I was out of there.
Then on April 20th, a friend told me that the Hulses put my picture of Jill and me on Facebook with the Hulses’ comments and asked if I had seen it. I never responded to the thread, but became more troubled when I saw on the 22nd that they made mention of an unclarified phone call from Rocky to me. Rocky called on the evening of the 21st, and we talked for a total of 1 minute and 49 seconds. All he asked me to do was to take down a copyrighted photo of him and Helen on my blog. That blog has been up since August 29, 2011, and this has been the only response I’ve gotten from Rocky! The copyright was from someone else’s site that I made reference to. Rocky told me that it didn’t matter. I complied and asked him if I could do anything else for him. He said, "No, just take it down." I did, wished him God’s blessing, and then ended the call. The next day I obtained permission from SacredGrovesOnline.org to post another picture of them, which I did.
Then on April 23, 2013, Jill responded to the thread by saying, “Helen and Rocky, I hope I can comment here. This was my fault. I did not realize there was such a short break between presentations, and got distracted by someone (not Rob). I should have headed back to the tables. I apologize for any inconvenience this caused you in giving your presentation.”
The Hulses responded, “Jill Martin Rische, we both know you as a dear friend. There is no need for you to apologize for anything. There were no people on the stage expect (Rob), we had several friends sitting in the room. Also there is much more to this situation than you or others are aware except for those involved in it. If anyone has contacted you and said otherwise, that truly saddest us. Rocky, did call (Rob) Sunday evening and spoke with him about this and the other legal violation.
Hopefully, there we will no further comments on this topic, nor this photo. If there is they will be deleted, as this topic is closed. God bless you our friend.” It's like the Hulses told her, "No Jill, you don't know what you're talking about. We'd rather believe our other friends who were there!"
Then on April 26, 2013, we noticed that almost all the comments on the Facebook thread were removed. The only comment that remained was from the Hulses, and it was edited to say, “Rocky, called and spoke with Rob, not 5 minutes ago. No one reading this has the knowledge of the entire situation. Rob, immediately agreed to what was requested by this ministry. It had nothing to do with this photo.

Then on April 28, 2013, we noticed that the whole post was deleted. If one wants verification of any comments on this post, we have screen shots.
Then on May 1, 2013, I received an email from SacredGrovesOnline.org asking that I take their picture of the Hulses down for the sake of peace. They said that Helen asked them not to share anything with the Hulses' image without their consent, since "they have secured legal rights over their likeness." I'm sure this is news for the paparazzi! So I complied with SacredGroveOnline.org and have posted my own screen shot of the Hulses shown above.
To date, the Hulses have offered no apology for all the trouble they caused.
What Should Have Happened
Ideally, if I had known Rocky was so pressed to get speaking, I would have just waited for Jill to come back to the foyer. He could have politely asked me, as well as the other guy, if he could get to his lecture and if we could have taken the picture out in the foyer. Rocky didn’t have to wait around, and he didn’t have to comply with my request to take the picture. Furthermore, if Rocky later became upset at the situation, he should have confronted me in private over this matter instead of making this a public matter (Mat. 18:15-19).
What Needs to Happen
Since I was publicly called out for offending the Hulses, I publicly state that I am sorry about this whole situation. I am sorry to find out publicly about this, and I am sorry to have unknowingly taken time from his lecture.
Having said that, the Hulses have a pattern of causing unnecessary division—not just with me, but with numerous Christian brothers and sisters who reach out to the Mormon community. What has happened to me is simply symptomatic of a much larger issue that has been going on for years now. Given this pattern, the following people have, after serious consideration, allowed me to state their names as individuals who have distanced themselves from the Hulses and also painfully feel that it has become necessary to go public: Aaron Shafovaloff of Mormonism Research Ministry, Russ Bales of MormonDoctrine.net, J. R. Merilatt and Josh Hess of Ephesians 2 Ministry, Princess Surjopolos of Living Word Enterprises, Suzanne Witt of Mormon & LDS Facts, Lori Vogt, Fred Anson—Founder and Editor of Beggar’s Bread, David and Sharon Taylor with Truth Seekers Outreach Ministries, Wendy Jensen of Mormon Deception and Art Haglund who were both former admins for the Mormon Missions Midwest Outreach Facebook page, Steve Dealy who runs the Nauvoo Christian Visitor's Center (that the Hulses used to run), and Richard and Lori Seedorf who ran the Nauvoo Christian Visitor's Center immediately after the Hulses. Others have wished to remain nameless, not wanting to incur further wrath from the Hulses, because they are simply perceived as bullies to many people. The Hulses have been confronted about this behavior numerous times. Some have spent considerable time attempting to mediate and reason with the Hulses, and it seems to go in one ear and out the other.
That being the case, my point is not to bring the Hulses to repentance. Of course all of us pray the Hulses repent, but we really don’t care about having a back and forth with them on this matter. This blog is not addressed to them. This is a time for telling the Church (e.g., Mat. 18:17), if for no other reason than to warn others. I know individuals who would not go near the Capstone Conference since the Hulses were going to be there. I also know of another who will not knowingly speak at any conference the Hulses are speaking at. I took my chances going to Capstone, since I wanted to meet Jill. But how many others need to be unnecessarily burned?
Christians worry about how this division is going to make us look in the eyes of unbelievers. Perhaps they may see us as unloving and just can’t get along with each other, and so why would unbelievers want to be a part of that? Then again, perhaps unbelievers will wonder why Christians won’t deal with evil within their own ranks. The Catholic priests’ sexual abuse scandal immediately comes to mind.
Regardless of how unbelievers perceive this situation, the Bible is quite clear about what to do with such individuals who sow discord among the brethren. "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them" (Rom. 16:17). Titus 3:9-11 also tells us, “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.”

I completely agree with your post. I am one who avoided the Capstone Conference because of the Hulses. I am greatly saddened by the actions of the Hulses, and wish there was not such division within the Body. Thank you for your post. I stand behind you 100%." Like Lori shared, I have also been wounded repeatedly by the actions of the above-mentioned (and those they rallied against me). I tried everything in my power to walk in Biblical peace, love & reconciliation with this party - but to no avail. I had no choice but to turn my case over to the Lord and separate myself according to His instruction. Nevertheless, I bless them & pray for them. I also praise the Lord for all the pain and tribulation that came to me on account of them and I count it all joy.
However, my prayers go out for all the other victims who have been hurt, sidetracked, confused or deceived. My dear reconciled friend Wendy is one such person who escaped their manipulation and deception. My other friend Art is an example of someone they attempted to bully into silence when he spoke out against their abuses. Another dear ex-Mormon Christian friend was ripped to shreds on their "ministry" wall for no good reason. And there are countless others cases - too many to name.
Of course, there are those who are sick of this drama and too tired to deal with it. Then there are others, as you said Rob, who are AFRAID to speak up because of what they have seen or been through. But God has not given us a spirit of fear!!! I am extremely tired of this also, but I believe that supporting you and adding my voice to this matter is the right thing to do at this time.
God bless you for not sitting idly by, denying this or ignoring the problem. Thank you for caring enough about others to sound the alarm. Not one single child of God deserves to be treated like trash by so-called Christian ministry leaders and their followers. True Christian leadership build God’s people UP, not tear them down – irrespective of their tax status or racial / social / economic standing. The things I have experienced and seen are a total disgrace. To conduct such activities against others - in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ - is unconscionable and God is the judge.
As Lori said, if someone needs help, a group of caring individuals is here for you. The disturbing behavior of the above-mentioned does not reflect the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. To all who are concerned: simply claiming to be a follower or servant of Christ is not enough. Please see Galatians 5:19-23. A tree is known by its fruit.

I am heart sick about this ongoing behavior, from people who claim to love Jesus and be part of the body of Christ. I really hate drama! and I have tried to separate myself from all of this since it started a few years back, but because these people refuse to stop their childish and destructive behavior, I believe that bringing it to the church and exposing it now, is what needs to be done. I for one have been slandered, attacked and been victim to the Hulses tatics
Links to my ministry and profile have been placed on their ministry wall trying to shame me and accuse me of attacking their ministry, in which I can not stomach even looking at.
I at one time tried to be friends and help with their ministry, but as time went on God convicted me to walk away and try to make a mends with her so called "enemies" and at the same time he convicted me to keep on walking towards a higher path. I have tried to turn the other cheek to the attacks on myself, only to see others put under the swinging hammer and it pains me greatly.
I for one will have nothing to do with their ministry nor them.

Rocky is an ungodly and cowardly man for NOT dealing with things in person, and for not controlling his busybody, trouble making, lying mouthed, vulgar and deceitful wife.

Now I am seeing the bigger picture. I don't like to unfriend people, as we are all sinners...but this was clearly nothing more than childish behavior.
It is truly saddening, and disturbing! My sole desire is to see my LDS loved ones come to a saving faith in Christ. I follow many of these outreach ministries to, perhaps, help me be a more effective witness.

It's nothing but pure HYPOCRISY to make a stink about someone using their photograph or name somewhere and yet have absolutely no conscience about doing the same exact thing (and worse) to other people! They actually behave like they are more important or have more rights than anyone else. They're not and they don't. God is no respecter of persons and neither is the law.
I and my friends have also been victimized by these people (and their followers) due to the misuse of our names, photos, copyrighted content, links to our pages and so forth. We have not experienced such crude behavior and privacy violations even from unbelievers. What a disgrace and a shame. Clearly they care more about appearances than about doing the right thing and bringing proper closure to this situation. Did they ever once apologize for using YOUR IMAGE without your permission???
Rob, if they didn't want you using their image on your blog then they should have never posted your likeness and that slander on their page in the first place. If they had conducted themselves as real Believers and handled their issue properly, you wouldn't have had to make the painful decision to confront and expose them for the problems they cause within the Body of Christ.

That being said, I ask you, If a rapist is attacking your wife, are you anti-rapist to stop him or are you pro-wife?
Christians are not, nor can they be anti-Mormon, because we are one thing and one thing only, pro-God.
Mormonism is the rapist, in this example, and the wife is the group of people that mormons attempt to take, with lies and heresy.
That being said, I was surprised and then again not so much to read what Helen wrote (the screen shots available on Ephesians 2 page)
Helen Hulse shows that her picture of herself is one that is somehow owed servitude and praise by the rest of cristendom, and that her blessing is requisite to any person attempting to bring truth to the LDS that their religion is built upon lies.
Her vulgar, curse-laden rants and vomiting forth that she want heads on platters is SO over the top that she has dismissed herself as anyone worthy of note, association fellowship.

That Porter Rockwell profile was Helen all along and she wrecked a lot of havoc using that fake page. Some of her followers have fake profiles too. Like Alice Sharbek, that is also a fake profile one of the admins on MMMO use.
We are the body of Christ and are to work in harmony and should not have to worry about junk like this going on.
The scriptures tell us that if our eye offends, to pluck it out or if our hand offends, to cut it off as it is better to enter Heaven maimed than to enter hell with the offending body part.
This makes me think that this can relate to the body of Christ as well. Cut off the offending part and throw it on the fire.
I hope I am expressing clearly what I am trying to say.

and if you have not read what the Hulses deleted, I suggest you do. Good job Russ and to Rob also. May I also make another comment on what I noticed. The young woman in question, did not look upset, or harrassed or anything but happy to pose for the photo.
Indeed, this was a mountain out of a mole hill but I have come to understand that Helen is one of those people who are only happy when they are making other people unhappy. There are admins on her MMMO page who are the same way and I believe that they feed off each other. I find it an unholy alliance and I pray that this is stopped before more Christians are harmed or those who may be saved will be turned off by the pettiness I have seen over the years on MMMO.
